iCANSleep
A revolutionary mobile app for cancer survivors with insomnia
Problem
Cancer survivors in Canada face unique challenges with insomnia. Traditional treatments are not always tailored to their specific needs, leading to sleepless nights and a diminished quality of life. There was an urgent need for an evidence-based, internet delivered insomnia treatment solution specifically designed for this population.
Solution
Sidekick Interactive partnered with the Sleep, Health, and Wellness Lab at Memorial University of Newfoundland to co-develop and co-design the iCANSleep app. Focusing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), we created a mobile application that offers personalized treatment for cancer survivors.
Key features of the app include:
- Sleep Diary: Every morning, users complete a sleep diary by answering questions about the previous night’s sleep, including what time they went to bed, how many times they woke up during the night, and what time they woke up.
- Sleep Plan: At the end of each module, the app calculates an ideal sleep window based on the user’s previous week of sleep, adjusting the sleep prescription according to the progress made.
- Sleep-Related Articles: In each of the 7 weekly modules, users can read short articles on topics such as managing worries, sleep and pain, and personal stories from cancer survivors who have tried the treatment.
“Throughout the development process, we worked closely with the researcher to incorporate user feedback and ensure that we maximized the budget to achieve her objectives. This collaborative approach ensured that every aspect of the app met the specific needs of cancer survivors.”
